HONU HALE

Sitting on Poipu’s Waikomo stream, with amazing views of the turtles coming in and out of the bay, this house was just calling to be named “Honu Hale” (meaning house of the turtle)!  This outdated water-front home was stripped down to the bare studs, and completely rebuilt.  Some architectural changes were made to incorporate an indoor laundry room, expand the kitchen and both lanai’s, and make the Master Suite more luxurious.  Everything was replaced & upgraded, including the roof, new solar panels, windows, doors, plumbing and electrical.  Sara worked closely with Todd Dorny of Kauai Premier Builders to ensure that all of the details were carried out as envisioned.  The client desired an aesthetic that blended the hawaiian plantation style, with some traditional elements.  Many custom details were added to make this home special.  The exterior of the home was kept clean, simple, and white with dark bronze accents and a painted front door.  The copper gooseneck sconces add a beautiful touch, and will patina over time to a lovely green color.  The outdoor grill and two ocean-view lanai’s provide the perfect spot for entertaining or just having a nice home-cooked meal with the family.  The puka lava tile flooring, custom railing detail, lava rock walls, and tropical landscaping embrace the true essence of hawaii living.  Interior finishes remain classic and practical, with a wood-look porcelain tile flooring, tongue-and-groove wall paneling, sliding barn doors, painted cabinetry, and polished chrome fixtures.  Walk-in showers and a free-standing tub in the Master Bath, provide spa-like ammenities.  An opalescent glass mosaic tile in the Kitchen and Master Bath adds a magical, reflective element.  The serene master suite features a vaulted ceiling and a built-in window seat with additional storage.  Furnishings are simple, yet elegant.  The color palette of hibiscus pink, sage green, aqua blue, and chrome grey is cheerful and happy!  The koa wood sofa and chairs were found at a vintage shop in Hanaeli and add a bit of Hawaiiana to the home.  Rugs and fabrics were chosen for their colorful motifs and long-lasting durability.  The client’s own collection of art, including an original by Christian Riso, reflects their love of botanicals and sea life.  All of these elements combine to create a classic, timeless, and restful place to enjoy watching the turtles, ocean waves and rainbows from the back lanai’s!
